A Monologue

By Hüseyin Serhat Arıkan on November 17, 2018

Here is a monologue to be conducted by Hamlet the Junior, a character with which I have been planning to re-write Hamlet.

I don’t want to exist. No, at least
not in this form, not as the being
I am now.

But I would not prefer
to not exist either
I wish I could be
what is unlike me, the other.

Oh, how happy I would be
if my body was an eternal cloud
to oversee time and attend Caesar
While he is talking to himself
Unaware that Cleopatra is near.

Look at the victor of death
still in the middle of a desert,
and his image better
               than a sphinx in magnificence
yet a void is growing in his heart
his heart, which tamed River Nile.
Who am I then, who am I then,
                                  who am I
to wish what couldn’t be done by this master?

I study Political Science at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. I am in the second year of my university education. I am planning to pursue an academic career after graduation. I especially am into poetry and music. My poems were published in literary magazines in Turkey: Kitap-lık, Sözcükler, and Sincan Istasyonu several times. I am planning to apply Yasar Nabi Youth Award for Poetry in next year, an award which has been the driving force of introducing young and successful poets to Turkish literature. I also want to re-write Hamlet, adapt it to modern age and conditions in a different setting.
