Those men... (Inspired by Jamaica Kincaid)
Hey BOY, what’s that? What kind of a barber gave you that princess haircut? Get rid of it for God’s sake, it’s not becoming of an Armenian man to have those spagettis on his head, man up! My dear, DEAR son, you are a wunderkind, you can multiply, divide and count percentage even not going to the elementary school yet! What a child! You know, I can smell that genius in you, you are genius, you are the best child in the world, I love you so much, my boy. SON, if someone mistreats you, you repay him seven times more, you break him, you make him beg for mercy! And son, if anyone, ever, ever offends your family… you know what to do… Hey BUD, we got a j from the elder brothers in the hood, meeting behind the garages tonight, you should come, come on! What do you mean your parents won’t let you? Are you a MAN or a PUSSY? We all are doing it together, full stop. Yes, NAREK, I saw your hand raised, you may answer, what do you mean it happened in 1927? Are you telling me when your grandparents were born? The battle took place in 1727, you lazy thing, sit down, F. BROTHER, we should always be together, shoulder to shoulder fighting everyone who wishes bad for us in our qoucha, fight those bullies at school, fight in others’ qouchas, fight the police who wants our brothers behind the bars. We should be strong, always, we are men, men never cry, let it go, you did a good thing, he said that to our sister… he got his punishment, who cares about his mom crying? He deserved it, his family deserved it. You did a good thing, I’m proud of you lil’ brother. My LOVE, you are so talented, my sweet boy, you’re so kind, you can’t even hurt a fly! Your marks at math are impressive but please pay attention to your English classes, nowadays you won’t go far without English, learn Armenian well, it’s your native tongue! History of course, don’t forget about Russian, it was our language of study, also, be a role model for your little sister. She need strong brothers, who’d protect her pride and bright future. You, BASTARD! How many times I’ve told you to stay away from those motherfuckers?! I know their dad, that royal son of a bitch who was rotting on the entire neighborhood during the 90’s, stay away from them or I swear to God I will kill you and every one else! GRANDSON, why do you always do that to him? You know, he is your father, he wishes only the best for you, he loves you, in his own weird way, he loves you dearly… CITIZEN Margaryan, do you know your rights? Good. Now, tell me who, when and with what kind of wicked motivation did that? Don’t you throw dust into our eyes, you filthy animal! We got you, game over. We saw everything on the street cameras, no way to escape now! My darling, my sweet boy, you did a horrible thing, but you know, your dad has talked with powerful people, everything is going to be okay, don’t you worry, mummy will always love you, I will be alright, you will be alright, you have a bright future ahead, my sweetheart… Private Margaryan! On the ground! If you disobey one more time, you’re gonna eat your own boots and then spend the rest of your useless life in the MP prison, that I swear to you by these stars. Honey, we don’t have enough for the piano classes, she missed two lessons already, do something, work more, change work, ask money from your friends, they are always there if they need something, don’t look at me like that, don’t go, listen to me, please, Narek! you were promising me the heaven on Earth, and what have you turned into? You can’t even… We don’t even… Please, don’t go tonight, don’t leave me tonight, stay with me, love me, love me like the very first time at Cascade, believe in us, you should believe in us, you should be yourself, you should be the Narek I loved once, you should be the best father for your girl, you are, but you should work more on that, you should work harder, I want our daughter to have the best future and not to depend on a man, you need to be a strong role model of a man for her, you should be a man, man up!
– Am I not man enough?
Norayr Manvelyan (b. 2000, Yerevan, Armenia) is a short-story writer in Armenian. His speakers are always self-critical as they are narrating the curious stories and the peculiar characters. Manvelyan’s inspirations are the people he has met on his life path and the experiences he shared with or the stories of which he has witnessed and heard about. Sincerity and music are cornerstones of the author’s prose work and especially poetry work. As an ultimate way of self-expression and introspection, Manvelyan gets exposed, almost naked against the whiteness of the paper, and dives into the depths of paper-ocean. “Writing is a perfectly rational process unless your pen is in your hand, then the pen takes you on a journey, and leads your hand in the unknown ways.” The poet believes in Love, the driving, creative and universal language that all the people have intrinsic knowledge of and can speak against all odds, Indifference, War and Hatred, and Beauty, the trace of Love in the physical and metaphysical reality we are living in.
With Love and Beauty.
